Bahn Mi, Beach Street, Boston.

Tucked away in Chinatown on Beach Street is the small Chinese-Vietnamese Bakery Mei Sum. Since being introduced to me by my friend, I go there at least once a week to get a Bahn Mi (basically a Vietnamese sub) with tofu. This sandwich, which is filled with slices of veggies, hot peppers & cilantro is not only delicious but it’s INCREDIBLY cheap (only $3! – that’s less than I pay for my soy latte at Starbucks…). In addition to sandwiches the bakery also sells an assortment of breads & pastries. Currently my favorite sweet pastry is the Jin Deui – aka the sesame seed ball. It’s light and fluffy dough ball covered in sesame seeds and filled with red bean paste; the consistency takes a little getting used to but when you do, it’s a nice little post-sandwich treat.
